Phil’s first taste of Latin America was in 2003 when he disappeared with his backpack and guide book for a year. He loved it so much he turned his new passion in to his career and upon his return swiftly joined a travel company so he could tell the world how incredible Latin America was. 20 years and countless return fact finding trips later, from deep Southern Patagonia to the Caribbean coast of Colombia, Phil joined Last Frontiers to further share his experiences.

Most memorable moment

There have been many, but driving out on to the vast salt flat in southwest Bolivia for the first time is right up there. The sheer scale and the contrast between the white salt and blue sky is mind blowing. Arriving in the calm of Antarctica after a force 9 storm in the Drake Passage will also live very long in the memory!

Top tip

Be respectful to local people. Before you take their photograph, ask if you may do so, and be sure to show them the picture afterwards.

Next 'must see'

I have been very lucky to have seen a lot of Latin America, but high on my list is to self-drive around the spectacular desert scenery of northwest Argentina. Also, having visited the Falkland Islands many times, travelling by boat further in to the South Atlantic to the wildlife haven of South Georgia would be truly amazing.
